Volunteer Meeting & Spring Encampment Update - Making Lemonade out of Lemons

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Monthly Volunteer Meeting is tonight at 6:30 Parkway Middle School Auditorium.

We have an encampment update: All Levels Welcome!

Last month, after initially hearing news of the damage to GSSD Balboa cabins LMSU’s leadership team began gathering information on alternate locations for Spring Encampment.

After receiving the message below from GSSD, we have decided on a pretty incredible plan B location: Green Oaks Ranch in Vista, CA just 45 minutes north of GSSD Balboa. Here is an aerial video of the property: https://youtu.be/Cr4gKyq7Alg

Encampment at Green Oaks Ranch includes meal service for 4 meals in the dining hall, campfire program Saturday night, archery, star gazing, hiking, a nature center with petting zoo (goats, donkeys, bunnies OH MY!), arts and crafts and badge earning activities for all levels.

We are no longer capped by the capacity at the Balboa Program Center, so all levels are welcome to attend.

Cost per camper (girls and adults):

Tents: $66 per person for the weekend.

Cabins: $86 per person for the weekend.

Day Camper: $30 Saturday

We will have more information and can answer questions at our monthly volunteer meeting. Wednesday February 15, 2023 6:30pm Parkway Middle School. We understand that this change in location may change your troops ability to join us April 21-23, 2023. Deposits will be returned to any troops that need to cancel.

Please poll your families and reply to this message with your troops' updated RSVP.

Thank you,

LMSU Spring Encampment Team

Message from Girl Scouts San Diego:

“You may have heard about the damage our property suffered in the windstorm late last month. Winds gusting up to 65 mph hit our beautiful Girl Scouts San Diego campus on Balboa Park, causing a eucalyptus tree to fall on one of our beloved cabins and suffer significant damage. We are extremely grateful that no one was injured when this happened. Unfortunately, the tree falling cutoff power to all three of our cabins and damaged the power cables. We’ve been consulting contractors and our insurance company and are moving forward with necessary work. Power to our Balboa Cabin Levels will be unavailable through April”
